Osteoarthritis threatens daily mobility and independence. This chronic and debilitating illness affects 27,000,000 Americans which leads to permanent damage in joints. This is the real reason why your friends over 50 say it’s hard to get out of the bed sometimes. The medical reason is that Osteoarthritis makes cartilage thin and causes fluid to leak in the joint leading into more pain and swelling.
There is one treatment you’ve never heard of.
This is not some type of remedy that can only be used for a few days. It’s something you already have in you but never thought of. One Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Keck School in the University has discovered news ways to heal joints and the tissue. His name is Dr. Denis Evseenko and he is opening new doors into Osteoarthritis.
He is taking two new approaches to this overwhelming issue.
Research in 2015 lit a match that started a fire of new developments in the world of arthritis. Dr.Evseenko received investment from the National Research Association. He is still being funded from grants including a 1.5 million dollar grant from the Institute for Medicine (CIRM).
We talked about what it means to feel better and then who is doing the research on feeling better.
Now let’s talk about where the future is headed.
Physically demanding surgeries that take too long to recover from are becoming a thing of the past. Total knee replacement with artificial joints only has a lifespan of about 20 years. This becomes an issue for people younger than 35 years of age.
This problem is being addressed and solved by Dr. Evseenko (Dr.E for short) Dr. E is going to target young people at first because their bodies regenerate faster. With only a 20 year lifetime on a knee replacement, This becomes a major issue for a 30-year-old.
What is this new solution to Osteoarthritis that already exists in our bodies? Could it really change how you and I feel permanently?
You were born with stem cells in your body. Dr. E is going to use what you already have to fix what your Osteoarthritis is a 2 part process.
Dr. Evseenko will use stem cells to generate long durable lasting cartilage. He is 3 years away from conducting Human Trials. It won’t belong. Help is soon on the way. He is looking to saving stem cells to use in future cartilage repair. The long term goal is that this research will lead to transplants for patients that have had cartilage injuries or arthritis. This would eliminate the need of joint replacement.
The third part of this is in place right now as animals are being used to test everything out first. It will be a drug that will make the regeneration and growth of cartilage.
With cartilages, limited growth ability. This drug that regrows stem cells found in the body would be the big advance in regeneration. The molecule could be intended to regenerate tissue and to complement stem cell research with or with out any stem cells at all.
As with all new drugs in the market, It must endure testing to ensure its safety for the public.
Is this dream a reality?
Taking a drug from initial conception to the mass market is hard. Dr. Evseenko realized the limitation to research early on during his career. He saw great discoveries die in the laboratory room long before anyone heard about them. Foundations like Arthritis National Discovery Foundation and many others are so important to making this dream into a reality.
The immediate time right after a drug loses funding is called “ Valley of the Death”. It is called this because it can either die in the lab or be granted new funding to move to another level. It’s like looking for a needing in a haystack to get another company willing to take a risk.
Dr. E is one of the few to receive enough grants and to not lose research funding in the Valley of Death. The pain of this work is being taken on by Dr. Eveensko and all the Arthritis Research. Better treatments and cures are on the way with all of our help. Let’s all help ourselves and those around us.
